The Live Oak Acorns boys water polo team had no trouble defeating Carmel Wednesday.
The boys (6-1) won 16-4. Justin Short led the Acorns with eight goals, and Bryson Bailey had four.
With league rival San Benito losing to Salinas, Salinas will be looking to knock off the Acorns in Salinas Tuesday.
“Salinas believes this is their year to upset us,” said Live Oak coach Mack Haines. “They have three returning All-League players, it’s at their pool and they have a good coach in Gary Figuroa, so they should be very formidable. This will be their last opportunity. (Live Oak will be playing in the Blossom Valley Athletic League next year.) Teams are closing the gaps in scoring with us because of their summer programs.”
But Haines said if his team is able to keep generating offense and playing solid defense like it has been, there shouldn’t be any trouble.
“We have to play really strong defense and have to take advantage of our speed on their attack,” Haines said. “We are significantly stronger in the hole. If (goalie) Shea (Coleman) can stop them defensively, we should be able to counter offensively.”
Live Oak will be competing in the Menlo tournament this weekend. Their first game was against Gunn on Friday.
Live Oak Ladies Stay Perfect
Live Oak Ladies water polo team (4-0, 2-0 league) defeated Carmel 17-2 Wednesday. Ronni Gautschi led the way with six goals. Brenna Sennert had four, Kady Robinson had three, Laura Shope had two and Ashley Rojas and Suzie Burdman had one each. Chelsea Carrillo had a strong performance at goalie.
The girls will be competing in the Autumn Invitational at Lynbrook and St. Francis. They played their first game against Rio Americano Friday.
“We’re doing well,” said coach Sharon Hyrne. “We’re playing strong in all aspects of the game, and we continue to improve with each game. This will be a real test for us this weekend, playing some quality teams.”

The Live Oak JV team defeated Carmel 16-2. Missy Wilder had five goals, Jessica and Melissa Poon had three each, Alisa Pinarbasi and Denae Chappell had two each and Kristi Short added one goal. Shelby Carrillo had a good game at goalie.
Tough Week for Acorn
Fielders Ends With a Win
The Live Oak field hockey team(3-2, 1-0 league) survived a tough week on the road, and according to coach Christy Musselmann, posted high marks.
The Acorns opened with a 2-0 loss at Mitty Monday and then lost 2-0 to Los Gatos on Wednesday. Live Oak recovered by Wednesday to win its league opener 1-0 Thursday against Cupertino. Sophomore Lexy Nuño scored the only goal.
Live Oak has had some lopsided games in recent history against Los Gatos, but that was not the case this time.
“We were really tired, and you could tell it,” Musselmann said. “But we played one of the best games I’ve seen. Every year, we’ve closed the gap against Los Gatos. If we could play that way against all the teams in our league, we will have a great season.”
Live Oak had several good scoring opportunities, including a ball that bounced off the post. Los Gatos scored its second goal on what appeared to be a short corner. The teams were already in the setup for the short corner, when the referee was convinced by the Los Gatos coach that it was actually a goal.
Janet Lee played in goalie the first half and has yet to allow a goal this season. April Herrera played the second half, and also played well, Musselmann said. The two goalies have been alternating this season for Live Oak.
Spikers Lose to Leland After Strong Tournament Showing
The Live Oak volleyball team (9-4) lost in four games to visiting Leland Tuesday after finishing a successful 9-4 tournament in Reno over the weekend. Live Oak made it to the King Division, the second highest, in the tournament.
The Acorns saw Leland in Reno, and Leland was the only team to defeat Live Oak in Saturday’s play. On Tuesday, Live Oak lost 20-25, 27-25, 21-25, 13-25. The Acorns were led by Kristen Russ with 12 kills and Katarina Cinkova with eight kills. Sabrina La Corte had 35 assists. Russ had 24 digs and Talia Reyes-Ortiz had 19.
“We didn’t play that badly,” said Live Oak coach Laura Coleman. “In the fourth game, we just got tired. I don’t know if they were tired from Reno. But its back to the conditioning. We were coming from behind every game, and it takes a toll mentally. In a long rally, we usually made the mistake. They dug everything.”
Netters Struggle With Notre Dame, Dominate Gilroy
Live Oak ladies tennis team was at the opposite ends of the stick this week against Notre Dame and Gilroy.
The Acorns won just one set at Notre Dame Tuesday but then dominated visiting Gilroy Thursday to win 7-0.
Against Gilroy, No. 1 Shalia Patel beat Amy Hung 6-0, 6-4; No. 2 Becca Reis beat Kayle Medina 6-1, 6-0; No. 3 Rachelle Abbey beat Anna Kwong 6-1, 6-1 and No. 4 Karissa Watanabi beat Laura Seekatz 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, No. 1 Kiera Watanabi and Arianne Hosseini defeated Robin Beckman and Monica Valdez 6-1, 6-3; No. 2 Mattise McClellan and Jasmine Tharayil defeated Amanda Logan and Sarah Welka 6-1, 6-2 and No. 3 Sherisa Hosseini and Kala Cleeton defeated Rita McDonough and Anne Zelina 8-6, 6-2.
Golfers Finish Seventh in
Tri-County Tourney
Live Oak ladies golf team finished seventh in the Tri-County Athletic League tournament Tuesday at Ridgemark with a score of 281. Santa Catalina finished first with a 162. Katie Delman led the Acorns with a 66.
On Thursday, Live Oak lost 280-202 to RLS at Spyglass. Michelle Dragescu had a 66 for Live Oak.
“For such a brand new team, the kids are doing great,” said coach Mike Rubino. “They are trying hard and were all enthusiastic even on the tough course.
