Live Oak High’s Cobbie Jones set another new school record this week. And, it’s in an event that’s not even her specialty.

Competing in the 300-meter hurdles in a league dual meet at Salinas High’s new all-weather track, Jones scampered to a 46.71 time, besting the previous school mark held by Michelle Guglielmo by .14 seconds. The time was the fastest in CCS this year.

Jones, who already owns the school record in her specialty – the 800, capped an amazing two weeks of competition during which she blazed to the second fastest time in CCS in the 400 (57.65) and finished fourth overall in the 800 at the renowned Arcadia Invitational.

“She’s obviously a talented athlete and she can succeed in anything she tries,” LO coach Dean Raymond said.

A couple of key plays at the plate and an opportunistic offense led the Live Oak High softball team to a key 3-2 victory over visiting Gilroy at Community Park on Wednesday.

The win kept the Acorns (3-1 in TCAL, 13-4 overall) in second place in league behind Notre Dame.

LO’s Juliette Bowers allowed three hits and struck out seven, while the Acorns took advantage of three Gilroy errors to score its runs.

Meanwhile, the LO baseball team rebounded from a 15-8 loss at Gilroy on Tuesday to salvage a pair of wins, beating the visiting Mustangs 5-0 on Thursday and upending host Palma 7-1 on Friday. LO (7-1 in TCAL, 12-6 overall) remains in first place in league.

On Thursday, LO’s Kyle Ferguson tossed a complete-game five-hitter, and Acorn Eric Nelson followed with a complete-game three-hitter on Friday.

On Thursday, Kyle Mosbrucker had a two-run triple, and on Friday he had four hits and a home run. Doug Porras led off Friday’s game with a solo homer.
