After competing for most of the season as the Live Oak High boys tennis team’s top singles players, the Matsumoto brothers made the switch to doubles especially for this week’s Tri-County Athletic League finals.
It paid off, as senior Nick and sophomore Eric advanced all the way to the doubles finale before losing. The Matsumotos swept through the first three rounds before falling 6-3, 7-5 to the Salinas team of David Morton and Sean Hemmer at Chamisol Tennis Club in Salinas on Friday.
In other TCAL finals results, LO’s Yrbyn Davis won his first-round singles match, beating Palma’s Anthony Pagtas 8-5, before falling in the second round, while the Acorn doubles team of Charles Seacat and Jacob Haim also won their first-round match, upending Gilroy’s Anthony Christian and Tomas Zenar, before losing in the second round.
Acorn singles players Kevin Parsons and Casey McElroy both lost their first-round matches, while the LO doubles team of Jake Plafker and Danny Smith also lost in the first round.
LO coach Chris Yoder capped his first season at the program’s helm.
