Dear Editor,

There is a possible alternative to the Sobrato High schedule for the 2005-2006 school year.

The faculty and administration at Sobrato High School have undertaken extensive research on the pros and cons of moving from traditional class scheduling to block scheduling.

After talking to teachers, students and parents who have experienced a block schedule atmosphere at other high schools, our faculty agreed to move forward to try a block schedule at Sobrato High School.

This decision was not made lightly or rashly. Some of the factors that I considered are the fact that students will be getting out earlier from school. If you have a student in an after-school program e.g. sports, this will allow more time for tutorials before they have to travel to a game.

We believe this change will be in the best interest of the students. A vast majority of parents also believe that this change will improve our children’s education.

Principal Richard Knapp and the faculty of Sobrato High went to the School Board meeting on Monday, April 25. The School Board told them not to institute the change to block scheduling.

In my opinion the decision of Sobrato High School to change to a block schedule should be made by the principal, faculty, parents and students. On Wednesday, May 4, 7pm in the Sobrato High School Gym, there will be an informational meeting on the topic of block scheduling.

Questions will be heard and answered. I hope everyone who will be attending Sobrato High School in the 2005-2006 school year will attend this meeting and make your interests and concerns heard.

I will be at the May 4 meeting with a petition for all of the parents who want Sobrato changed to a block schedule school to sign.

If you are interested, come by the table and sign this petition, which I will present to the Morgan Hill School Board to show them just how many parents (taxpayers) want our children to be taught with a block schedule. I hope to see you all there.
