Active Live Oak High School FBLA members recently returned from the Annual California State Leadership Conference at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport in Burlingame with some top awards. There were approximately 1,350 students and advisers in attendance from throughout the state where the main thrust was competitive events for the Future Business Leaders of America.

Winning first place was the team of Billy Wong and Roger Alcaraz with their multimedia presentation. This was a DVD promoting FBLA using the motto of service, education and progress to principals. Five finalists were selected from among all entries. The top five teams gave an oral presentation telling about the programs and the process they used to get to the finished product.

Another first place for Live Oak’s chapter was the recruitment of professional members as it recruited a total of 55 this year for the Professional Division.

Garnering second place was the team of Roger Alcaraz, Minna Chan and Simmi Dhillon with the chapter’s Community Service Project. Representatives from the top five projects among entries statewide give an oral presentation.

Also, taking second place was Live Oak’s Local Chapter Annual Business Report written and edited by Elaine Liu and Tiffany Shyuan. This report describes all of the activities during the year in keeping with a well-rounded program of work, similar to an annual corporate business report.

In individual competition, Aaron Cunanan placed 10th in Economics.

Alcaraz was one of the four winners of a $1,000 L. Byram Bates California FBLA Scholarship. Each year, Live Oak has had at least one winner since this scholarship was initiated.

Once again, Live Oak was a finalist chapter for the Jessie Graham award. This honor is awarded on the basis of a well-rounded program of work in line with the FBLA goals and projects for the year.

At the opening general session, the members heard Guy Kawasaki, managing director of Garage Technology Ventures, an early-stage capital firm and a columnist for Forbes.com. He spoke on the topic of “The Art of the Start,” his most recent book, describing points about how to become a successful entrepreneur.

In addition, students had the opportunity to attend relevant and interesting workshops such as Tips and Tools for Leadership Skills, New SAT?! Whatever!, Putting Your Best Face Forward, Building Your Wardrobe Portfolio, Business Starts Here, and Making Your Life Your Own – College Plans.

Of course, there was a mixture of fun with a dance on Friday and Saturday nights.

Now, preparations are under way for the National Leadership Conference where the Multimedia Presentation, the Community Service Project, and The Local Chapter Annual Business Report will face competition from throughout the nation.
