Live Oak High’s girls doubles team of seniors Deanna Martin and Jennifer Fraissl used their homecourt advantage to perfection at the Blossom Valley Athletic League finals at Live Oak this week.

As a result, Martin and Fraissl won a BVAL title and qualified to advance to next week’s Central Coast Section finals. The duo swept through the early rounds of the league finals tourney, upsetting the top-seeded team from regular-season league champion Leigh along the way. But they lost the first championship match in the double-elimination competition before emerging victorious in their second try.

LO also received fine performances from Roger Alcaraz, Minna Chan, Michelle Garber and Spencer Lines, who all finished in the top four.

Alcaraz, a senior, advanced to the semifinals before losing his first match to top seed Nguyen Vo of Leigh in boys singles, then advanced through the loser’s bracket to set up a rematch with Vo in the finale. Alcaraz lost and finished second.

Chan, a sophomore, and Garber, a senior, both lost to eventual girls singles champion Misa Tanaka of Pioneer before advancing to meet each other in the loser’s bracket finale. Chan edged her teammate, who took third, and went on to lose to Tanaka again in the championship final, taking second.

Lines, a junior, lost to Vo in the boys singles quarterfinals, then advanced through the loser’s bracket to claim fourth place.

Also competing for LO in the BVAL finals were sophomore Stephen Garber and junior Calvin Kiss in boys singles.
