John J. Marfia Sr. died Friday, May 27, 2005, in Gilroy after a
lengthy illness in Gilroy.
John was a resident of Gilroy for more than 50 years and an army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his shop, especially building his bird houses. His home away from home was Salmon, Idaho, where he spent two weeks every fall since 1960. He was married to his wife Bernice for 54 years. He will be missed by many friends and relatives. He worked as operations director for the Gilroy School District retiring in 1992. Member of St. Mary’s Church, American Legion #669. Past-member of Sportsman’s Chef Club.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Marfia of Gilroy; children Patty Nicholson of Gilroy and John Marfia Jr, of Hollister; grandchildren Michele, Melissa and Marc Nicholson of Gilroy, Johnnie and Joseph Marfia, Adam and Sarah Smith, all of Hollister; and great-grandson Trevor Smith of Hollister. He was the father-in-law of Bruce Nicholson and Patty Marfia.

Visitation is today 5-8pm at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Funeral services are at 10am Wednesday, June 1, at the funeral home. Burial will follow.

The family asks that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
