A gang fight last Saturday night was broken up by Morgan Hill Police officers before any of the Norteño or Sureño members were injured.

Police were called by a resident of San Luis Way at approximately 8:30pm to the San Pedro Gardens at 510 San Pedro, according to MHPD Cmdr. Joe Sampson.

“When officers arrived, there were about 30 gang members fighting, some with bats and some with sticks,” Sampson said. “They all scattered.”

One juvenile who was on a weekend pass from the William F. James Boys Ranch, was arrested and transported to Juvenile Hall.

Another youth allegedly fought back, Sampson said.

“I was told one of them turned on an officer, but was quickly put down,” he said.

Sampson said the fight had apparently only just started when officers arrived, and the youths did not seem to have been injured.

There are sometimes gang gatherings, with the potential to become fights, but Morgan Hill does not have a gang problem, according to Sampson.

“There are people, juveniles and others, who are gang associates, but the level of activity of gangs here in Morgan Hill is much less than in other cities,” he said.
