In a dress rehearsal before its first season begins next week, the Sobrato High frosh-soph football team had a few bright spots while competing in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Jamboree at Watsonville High on Friday night.
According to Sobrato head coach Jeff Patterson, the Bulldogs performed well considering they had only been together since late spring.
“Overall, it was like I expected,” Patterson said. “I thought we did pretty well.”
In fact, Patterson said Sobrato actually won its first mini-scrimmage by a 4-2 score against Soquel, driving for four first downs behind quatterback Adam Perez and tailback Steven Gutierrez.
Patterson said Perez had a 13-yard run on an option play, while Gutierrez rambled for a 35-yard run up the middle on one play.
On defense, the Bulldogs surrendered a few first downs on a couple of big plays, Patterson said, but free safety Chris Montoya came up with a big interception.
Sobrato now prepares for its first-ever football game, at Scotts Valley High on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Gavilan vs. West Valley
The pre-Coast Conference portion of the Gavilan Rams’ 2004 football schedule opens Saturday with a noon encounter with the defending Golden Gate Conference champion West Valley Vikings.
The site of the contest has been switched to Westmont High School.
West Valley, at No. 17, is one of three teams ranked among Northern California teams appearing on the pre-conference Gavilan schedule.
Live Oak High graduate Orin Catrett is a second-year starter at free safety for the Vikings.
Lango said that the Rams emerged from last weekend’s Blue-White scrimmage injury-free.
Lango has named red-shirt freshman Will Kilday (6-2, 230) as his starting quarterback, with Rhett Van De Mark as the backup.
