Now the real test begins.
This week, the Live Oak High football team will have its hands full with a talented Seaside team that has wreaked havoc on its first two opponents this season.
According to Acorn coach Glen Webb, who saw both Seaside games, the 2-0 Spartans showed off an aggressive, athletic style in routing San Diego in their opener and Washington of Fremont last week. Seaside beat San Diego 37-6, then shut down Washington 30-0.
“They’re a big, strong physical team,” Webb said. “In the first two games, they’ve been pretty dominant.”
Live Oak hosts Seaside on Friday at 7:30pm.
Seaside is led by quarterback Jermaine Carter, who rushed for 109 yards and two TDs against Washington, and standout fullback (and Division I college recruit) Henry Utumapu, who dragged defenders into the end zone on a 26-yard scoring rumble against Washington.
“They have one of the finest scramblers we’ll see, and a hard-running fullback,” Webb said. “Their quarterback is running wild.”
Utumapu sat out the second half with his shoulder wrapped, but 10th-year Alisal coach Al Avila said it was just a precaution. Ironically, Avila said his team was “flat” in the Washington game, despite its dominant victory in which the Spartan defense held its opponent to negative rushing yards.
For Live Oak, senior running back Doug Porras sat out the Alisal game with a sprained ankle but is expected back for the Seaside contest.
