Steven Gutierrez and Erik Woodruff both scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Sobrato High frosh-soph football team to a 37-12 rout of host Scotts Valley in the new school’s first football game.

Gutierrez, a freshman, scored both of his TDs on first-half runs, while Woodruff, a sophomore, tallied his scores in the second half on a 24-yard TD run and a tackle-breaking 85-yard kickoff return for a TD.

Sobrato dominated play, physically manhandling Scotts Valley the entire game.

Only a few questionable calls kept the score from being even more one-sided.

Sobrato High coach Jeff Patterson said he was thrilled with getting a win in the team’s first game.

“I think it’s really important for our program to get as many wins as we can — the more we win, the more kids will come out (for football),” Patterson said.

Despite a few sloppy moments, Sobrato looked surprisingly in-synch for a brand new program.

“I was relatively pleased,” Patterson said. “We have a long way to go, though.”

Sobrato took a 19-0 lead into the lockerroom at halftime on the strength of Gutierrez’s two TDs and an interception return for a score by sophomore Matthew Kellett.

Another first-half interception return for a TD was called back due to a holding call.

In the second half, the Bulldogs kept asserting their will on the Falcons behind Woodruff’s two TDs and an eight-yard TD scamper by sophomore Juvenal Rodriguez to cap the scoring.

On defense, the Sobrato frontline of freshman Thomas Buich, sophomore Sheldon William and sophomore Gennaro Redmond shut down the Falcon running attack for the most part and harassed the Scotts Valley quarterback into numerous errors.

The only blemish was Gutierrez’s shoulder injury in the second half, which Patterson said may keep him out for a few weeks.
