The Morgan Hill Raiders opened up the 2004 tackle football season on Sunday. Playing at their newly upgraded home field on the turf at Britton, the Raiders were excited to get the season rolling.
Sunday’s games were of the preseason variety against the Santa Teresa Bulldogs, with the outcome not reflecting on the win/loss record. But don’t tell that to the kids, as the Junior Pee Wee’s won 27-7 and the Junior Midgets rolled to a 31-6 victory. The Pee Wee 2 team won 18-6 while the Midgets capped the day with a 25-0 shutout.
Following are the team-by-team results:
MH Junior Pee Wees 27, Bulldogs 7
The Pee Wees wasted no time getting on the board, after receiving the opening kickoff, as the first play from scrimmage netted a 50-yard T.D run on a sweep by Julius Travis. Derrick Taylor ran in the extra point for a 7-0 lead that was never challenged all day.
The Bulldogs’ first possession netted a minus-24 yards when on back-to-back plays Hunter Sutton reeled in the carrier for nine-yard losses.
On the 3rd and 28, Tyler Pederson and Frankie Palmer teamed up on a 5 yard loss. The punt attempt was fumbled and the Raiders got the ball on the 1. QB Jerry Jacob scored on a keeper and with the extra point failure the score was 13-0.
MH Junior Midgets 31, Bulldogs 6
With fiery head coach Jimmy Soto looking for big things this year, the official first play of the game leads us to believe it so.
The Raiders’ Garret Duate took the opening kickoff to the house on a return up the gut of 70 yards for a TD.
MH Midgets 25, Bulldogs 0
For MH, Jose Luna scored on a 6-yard run, Stephan Davis scored on a 40 yard run, with 3 minutes left Deharo intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a score, and with time running out, Davis tossed a nice 20 yard T.D. reception.
