Thanks to a suffocating defense and another sterling performance from running back Justin Sweeney, the Gilroy High football team moved to 2-0 with a 35-0 shutout win at Gunn High Saturday.
“I’m pleased,” GHS head coach Darren Yafai said. “Going into this game, I really thought it was going to be more competitive – they have a bunch of returning starters from a 6-4 team. So it was nice we came out here and took care of business.”
The Mustangs didn’t take long to do it, either. With a dominating defense and a equally effective offense, Gilroy led 28-0 led by the end of the first quarter.
The Mustangs, who continue their road swing with a trip to Watsonville Friday, continued to show they know how to run the ball.
Aided by gaping holes created by the offensive line, the Gilroy backfield of tailbacks Sweeney, Marty Sustaita, Eric Rodriguez and fullback Tim DeLeon dominated play. Sweeney finished the game with 171 yards on just 14 carries.
The Gilroy defense was no less impressive. At halftime, the Mustangs had gained 362 yards – and had given up just 62. Gunn ended up with just 130 yards of total offense.
Hollister-San Benito 13, SLV 7
For the first time in 11 years, coach Chris Cameron had to listen to his team huddle on a cell phone. Cameron was absent from the 13-7 victory Friday over visiting San Lorenzo Friday to be with his son, who was undergoing an operation.
San Benito came out fired up after being shutout by Valley Christian the week before. The Haybalers quickly matched their total numbers of the week before. But despite out gaining SLV 179 to 106 in total offense in the first half, the score was tied at 7-7 at the half.
San Benito got on the board with 2:13 left in the first half when QB Karson Klauer ran it around the left side from 17 yards out for a touchdown.
With three minutes left before the half, SLV connected for its only touchdown of the game.
With 5:16 left in the third quarter, San Benito scored its final touchdown, after strong runs by Chris Brigantino and Gaitan, Charles Thompson ran the ball in from the 1-yard line.
