Dear Editor,

I am disgusted by the letter to the editor by Kelley Lamsens in the Aug. 21 edition of The Times in regard to a letter from Bryan Scopazzi. Not only is the tone and vocabulary utterly condescending towards Bryan, I was insulted by her complete disregard for the respect any serviceman or woman fundamentally deserves.

In particular, her final comment about a college education helping to expand Bryan’s views was especially degrading. Bryan is a very intelligent, well-informed individual, and what I find to be narrow minded is her assertion that the only way to have an open mind is to attend college. Isn’t living in a foreign country in the service of one’s country at an age when most people are sleeping 14 hours a day and drinking copious amounts of alcohol a decision very much deserving of respect?

Since Lamsens is so consistent in her usage of the word “young” to describe Bryan, I am inclined to point out that the lifestyle Bryan has chosen is one very indicative of responsibility and maturity. Regardless of his political views, the manner in which he was addressed in Lamsens’ letter is insulting and completely unnecessary.

Perhaps we should be the ones hoping that she will be able to expand her views to the point that they include common courtesy as a necessity, rather than the ability to degrade an individual merely interested in sharing his views.
