History was in the making as Live Oak High and Sobrato High met for the first time in an athletic contest.
The Acorns and Bulldogs hooked up in a field hockey match last week.
Playing in its first match of the season, Sobrato put up a valiant effort despite losing 16-0 to the more experienced Live Oak squad.
Nearly every player on the Live Oak team, which is expected to make a strong bid for the Central Coast Section playoffs.
The Acorns begin their quest for a Blossom Valley Athletic League title by hosting Del Mar on Friday.
Julie Jacobson of Live Oak scored the first goal, and Sarah Locarnini knocked in two in a row after that.
At halftime, the score was 8-0, giving the Acorn second stringers an opportunity.
Live Oak goalie Kassandra Sauza changed roles to play a little offense herself, scoring the 12th goal of the match.
Live Oak coach Christy Musselmann, who was once a player at Live Oak for current Sobrato coach Carmen Villegas, said it was a treat to play against the ex-Acorn coach.
And, Villegas said she was pleased with her squad’s effort, despite the lopsided score.
“The team was great,” said Coach Villegas, “for a team that’s just been happy to play.”
Sobrato goalie Naomi Macias was impressive, knocking off 15 saves.
