Off to a fine start with five wins in their first seven games, the San Jose Giants will play their home opener today at 7 p.m. against the Visalia Oaks at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.
First-round draft choice Matt Cain is slated to start for the Giants tonight against the A’s Darren Clarke.
Tonight’s game is being billed as “Guaranteed Win Night,” meaning Giants management is guaran-teeing a victory or fans will receive a free ticket to a future Giants game.
San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales will throw out the first pitch at tonight’s home opener.
The San Jose Giants and the All-Star Baseball Academy are also hosting a free kids clinic at Muni Stadium on Saturday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. All kids who participate will receive a free ticket to Saturday’s 5 p.m. game against Visalia.
After splitting their season-opening four-game series at Visalia, the Giants won three straight at Modesto earlier this week.
On Monday, San Jose’s Julio Cordido had three hits to ignite the Giants offense in an 8-3 win over the host A’s.
The Giants put Modesto away with a five-run fifth inning as they cruised to victory. Giants pitchers held the A’s to just six hits.
On Tuesday, San Jose pulled out a win on Julian Benavidez’s game-winning hit in the 10th inning.
Benavidez’s 10th-inning single scored Cordido, who reached base on a fielder’s choice, moved to second on a Todd Jennings single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Benavidez’s hit.
Then on Wednesday, San Jose leftfielder Carlos Sosa had four hits, including his first home run, to lead the Giants to a 10-3 victory over the A’s.
Sosa, hitting .150 in 20 at-bats entering the game, singled home the first run of the game in the first inning, cracked a solo home run in the third, doubled in the fifth and singled in a run in the sixth.
The Giants (5-2) also got three hits and three RBIs from second baseman Aaron Sobieraj, who hit a two-run homer in the second inning. San Jose finished with 15 hits.
San Jose was scheduled to finish off its season-opening road trip on Thursday night at Modesto.
Notes: Cordido is hitting .310 with seven RBIs in seven games so far this season; Benavidez hit three home runs in the season-opening series at Visalia.
