After dropping the first two games of a four-game home series to the Modesto A’s, and dropping out of first place in the California League’s North Division, the San Jose Giants were in need of a win on Wednesday.
And, they turned to former top draft choice Matt Cain, who responded with 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball to help lead the Giants to a 6-1 victory over the A’s.
Cain picked up his first win of the season with the effort, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out nine.
San Jose (8-6) got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles by Jake Wald and Fred Lewis.
The Giants added a run in the fourth, and Dan Trumble slammed a solo home run to highlight a two-run eighth inning rally for San Jose.
Giants closer Jeremy Accardo picked up the save.
The Giants, who were scheduled to play the series finale Thursday night, lost the first two games against Modesto by scores of 4-2 on Tuesday and 6-2 on Wednesday.
San Jose begins a season-long 10-game road trip at Visalia on Friday.
