The upcoming weekend is turning out to be the time to check out
wildflowers. While varied and abundant flowers of many shapes,
sizes and colors can be seen along almost any rural road and field,
there are more formal tours organized for families and flower
fans.
The upcoming weekend is turning out to be the time to check out wildflowers. While varied and abundant flowers of many shapes, sizes and colors can be seen along almost any rural road and field, there are more formal tours organized for families and flower fans.
Close to home is the annual Wildflower Exhibit at the Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum, 21350 Almaden Road, Sunday, April 18, at 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The museum is located on Almaden Road, south of Almaden Expressway.
Farther afield, in Los Banos, the public is invited to Pacheco State Park on Saturday, April 17, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., for “Wildflower Day.”

Representatives from California State Parks, California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and many others will be on hand to answer questions and distribute information. Free “Self-guided Nature Hikes” and “Flower Identification Guides” will be available. Naturalist-led hikes will depart at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a limited number of people-sign-ups are first-come-first-served the day of the event.
A contest will be held to find who can see the most species of wildflowers at the park during the day. All visitors will receive a free Pacheco Wildflower Button. The only fee for this event is the $4 state park day use fee per car.
Facilities at Pacheco State Park are limited so bring your own water (no drinking water is available) picnic lunch, sunscreen, hat and sturdy footwear. Pacheco State Park is at the top of historic Pacheco Pass, just take the Dinosaur Point Road Exit off of Highway 152, 22 miles east of Gilroy, and follow the signs.
