A Morgan Hill resident was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run following a motorcycle accident early Friday morning that resulted in the death of a passenger.

Steven Lacerda, 29, was riding his 2002 Suzuki motorcycle at 55 mph northbound on Condit Road approaching Diana Avenue when he went off the roadway and hit a fire hydrant, severing it in half and shooting water 30-40 feet in the air.

The crash threw Lacerda on the roadway and his passenger, Leeanne Seward, 23, of Morgan Hill, into a field. Lacerda suffered minor injuries.

Seward was found unconscious in the field suffering from major head and internal injuries. She was air lifted to San Jose Medical Center where she died Sunday.

The California Highway Patrol said Lacerda fled the scene and was later arrested on charges of DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter, causing injuries, felony hit-and-run, failure to notify a police officer and failure to render reasonable assistance to injured persons.
