The start of the downswing is a mystery to many golfers. They either spin open quickly with their left side, which produces shots that start left or they lunge forward with the upper body, setting up weak slices. In a good swing, the forward motion starts with a lateral move to the front foot, followed by the rotation of the lower body toward the target. To correct spinning open, you must shift your weight to your front foot before rotating your body on the downswing. To feel this move, stick a broken shaft or similar object in the ground at the outside of your left foot and practice hitting balls. At the start of the downswing, bump the shaft with your left knee before you start rotating. To fix a forward lunge, try keeping the buttons of your shirt pointed behind the ball through impact. Your head and upper body will stay back on the downswing, allowing you to approach from the inside and make a more level swing. This will keep your arms swinging in front of you and the clubhead passing your hands.
