How much time is too much time? Many golfers spend more time
than they need, tinkering with their swing with club selection, or
over analyzing the shot. The PGA tour allows a player 40 seconds to
hit a shot. On average, it should only take 15-20 seconds once you
made your club selection.

Playing competitive golf, I would always sense when my competitor or myself was getting a little nervous or unconvertible. You start adding extra waggles or thinking of one or two swings. But the most obvious is spending too much time preparing or executing the shot.
When approaching your shot, first check the your yardage and wind direction. Make your club selection and go through your pre-shot routine. Note that it’s important to have a pre-shot routine because this will save time and eliminate any second thoughts in your mind. Then, focus on your target and swing.
Next time you’re out practicing, use a watch with a second hand to test how long it takes you to hit a shot. You will be surprised. If it’s over 30 seconds you’re taking too long.
