Sobrato High’s brand new football team will get its first chance to show off its new uniforms, pads and playing ability when the Bulldogs open up the season at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Junior Varsity Jamboree on Friday.

The jamboree, which will be held at Watsonville High beginning at 6 p.m., will feature the frosh-soph Bulldogs, along with JV teams from Watsonville, Soquel and Harbor. The JV Jamboree will be followed by a varsity jamboree.

Sobrato opens its regular season at Scotts Valley at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9.

LO girls split four games at SC tourney

Competing in its first action of the season, the Live Oak High girls volleyball team won two and lost two at the Santa Cruz Tournament last weekend.

The Acorns beat Monterey and The Kings Academy, and lost to Aptos and Salinas.

Acorn head coach Laura Coleman said the squad learned some things about itself during the tourney.

“What was nice was we got to see where we needed work,” Coleman said, pointing out that Live Oak needs to improve its passing and defense. “But we’ve only had one week of solid practice, as other teams have.”
