Dear Editor,
It may not happen next month, next year or even for a decade or two, but eventually Morgan Hill will be hit by another large earthquake or some other man-made or natural disaster.
In Gilroy however, more people will survive because our mayor and City Council have taken extra precautions to ensure our safety.
John F. Kennedy said: “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” Two years ago Gilroy unanimously passed The Wireless Telecommunication Ordinance, which not only keeps radiation emitters a safe distance from children’s homes and schools, but also mandates a backup emergency electrical generator on every cell phone tower.
Electricity and telephone lines often go down just after a disaster, but those Gilroyans who are hurt should still be able to summon help even when all else fails. Schools, doctors and emergency responders will still be able to be called.
The new law accomplishes it all without raising any new or existing taxes. It costs the city nothing, all safety compliance and enforcement costs are paid by the telecom providers.
The law has been pending in Morgan Hill now for over a year, with city staffers claiming they apparently have no time to move it forward. But the ordinance is already written. The City of Gilroy and San Benito County Supervisors have already enacted it for their citizens.
If you would like the new law to be put in place to protect citizens in Morgan Hill, go to: www.morgan-hill.ca.gov/
Click on City Government & elected City Officials, then send Mayor Dennis Kennedy and your City Council an e-mail asking when the Morgan Hill Wireless Telecommunications Ordinance will be enacted to protect your family?
And while you’re online, perhaps click on: www.calstar.org
Click on membership, and learn how your entire family can receive life saving emergency air rescue service for only pennies a day. Non-profit CALSTAR Emergency Rescue Helicopter is the only air ambulance from San Jose to Santa Maria, and the only way to get a critically injured patient to a trauma center within the golden hour. When seconds count, they will save the life of someone you love, and if you are a member, the typical $14,000 medical airlift bill does not apply.
We all pray for the safety of our community and those we love, but in the 21st Century, the simple equation is just that we must be prepared. Please help your leaders with the task, the life you save may be a child’s.
Chris Coté, Gilroy
