Sasko, the Morgan Hill Police K-9, earned his doggie biscuits Saturday as he, with the help of some two-legged officers, apprehended a suspect in a battery case.

MHPD Lt. Joe Sampson said Tuesday that a Morgan Hill man fled after his girlfriend called police, and Sasko traced him so officers could arrest him on charges of domestic assault and battery and take him to county jail.

“Sasko was able to find him for us,” he said. “This is the kind of work he does best.”

The call for help came in at approximately 5am Saturday morning. A resident of the Christina Apartments on West Main Avenue reported her ex-boyfriend, Porfirio Perez, was intoxicated and upset because she had broken up with him recently.

Perez, 32, of Morgan Hill, allegedly entered her home through a bedroom window and beat the woman about the face and head with his fists. When she was able to grab the telephone to call police, Perez fled.

Officers arrived at the apartment to find the ex-girlfriend with bruises and swelling, and Perez gone. She refused to be taken to the hospital but was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Sasko was on Perez’s trail, following his scent up West Dunne Avenue to the end where the water tower is located. Sasko soon found Perez, Sampson said, hiding under a large bush. Perez was arrested without incident and taken to county jail.
