It’s difficult not to be fascinated by the City Hall “scandal” although I did my best to refrain up to now. I am mystified as to the logic of these “accusations” by attorney Bruce Tichinin and Councilwoman Hedy Chang and presumably others who frequent Sorci’s barber shop.

Our city manager and city attorney are under oath to serve the interests of the city and its residents. I would certainly hope that they communicate frequently with each other and other city staff especially about legal matters.

Now, if our city attorney or, for that matter, the city manager (I don’t want to be accused of sexism) had a “relationship” with Howard Vierra; that could logically be construed as a “conflict of interest” since Mr. Vierra is a developer who is petitioning the city for a zone change.

I am most disturbed by the “spying” on Mr. Tewes. I lived through the McCarthy era and the Cointel era of the 60’s, not to mention the Reagan years.

We are now in the throes of the Patriot Act which once again encourages spying on ordinary citizens going about their business and exercising their constitutional rights. Thousands of lives and careers were ruined during these repressive years. Let’s not go backwards, folks.

I end with a quote from one of my favorite sociology teachers: “If I had to judge someone’s moral character, I would much rather know their political practices than their sexual preferences.” I think you get an F on this one, Mr. Tichinin.
