Competing against 22 other teams from all over Northern California, the Morgan Hill Pride 14-and-under softball team took fifth place overall at the NSA Northern California State Championships in Salinas on July 4. The Pride 14U team is coached by Wes Hillman and Marla Abeyta.
Following are the tourney results:
NorCal Flyers 5, Pride 4:
In a very close game that could have gone either way, Pride was lead by pitchers Danielle Clampett and Kelly Hillman. Pride scored two runs in the second inning with Holly Turay and Tanya Ferry coming across to tie the game at 2-2. Stephanie Doting scored in the fourth, and Kristi Admundson put another run on the board for Pride in the fifth, but it was not quite enough. That left a very tough row to hoe for the Pride team which had to start early on Sunday and play four games to come through the loser’s bracket.
Pride 7, Team Action (Concord) 4:
Pride came out very slow and were trailing 4-0 through the first four innings. Then the bats came alive and Pride rallied when Ferry, Shayna Osuna and Admundson scored in the fifth.
Pride added another four runs in the sixth with Ferry and Osuna scoring on a game-winning hit scorched through the right side by Admundson.
Pride 16, Extreme 2:
Pride breezed through the second game on Sunday, led by two doubles from Danielle Clampett. The whole team got into the action, including Sarah Cornaggia scoring the lone Pride run in the third inning.
Concord Maverick 3, Pride 1:
Pride needed to win again to keep moving through the loser’s bracket play and came up a little short to the Maverick in a tough game.
The Pride girls played well behind the strong pitching of Cornaggia and Clampett and with strong defensive plays by Ally Barsanti and Dahajaira Lopez.
The only Pride run was scored by Ferry in the first, with a number of rallies that the Maverick team held off for their win.
The Pride 14U team will be playing in its next tournament this weekend at Twin Creeks in Sunnyvale.
Then, Pride will be off to the Western World Series July 16-23 in St. George, Utah.
