Coming back from a loss to Los Gatos No. 1, the Morgan Hill Pony 14A all-star team rebounded to beat the host squad twice to win the Sectional Tournament at Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos last weekend.
After losing to Los Gatos No. 1 7-3 on Tuesday last week, MH came back with a vengeance to beat San Jose Pacific 22-7 last Thursday to set up the rematch with the host team.
On Friday, MH beat LG 13-4, then returned for the “if necessary” game on Saturday and won 13-3 to capture the section title.
MH now advances to the Regional Tournament on Tuesday at Los Altos’ Rosita Park. The local team will play the winner of the Monterey Peninsula section tourney.
The local all-star squad tallied 85 runs in its six sectional games on 86 hits. Five MH players batted over .500 for the tourney.
Meanwhile, the MH Colt A’s are set to begin hosting West Zone All-Star Tournament play this week. The Colt A’s, led by Manager Dave Newton, start Zone play on Thursday at 5pm at Valley Christian High in San Jose.
MH will play the winner of the first-round matchup on Thursday at noon between Santa Clara and San Jose PAL.
In other all-star play, the MH Palomino A’s won their Regional Tournament opener on Saturday but lost twice on Sunday and were eliminated.
MH started off against Santa Cruz, fashioning a 7-0 lead through five innings behind the pitching of starter Dave Massinter, who had a no-hitter going into the sixth.
But SC rallied to tie the game with two in the sixth, and five in the seventh.
In extra innings, MH rallied with two outs in the eighth. Jake Bouslog got hit with a pitch, Jarred Kwock also got hit with a pitch and Marty Mullins drew a walk to load the bases. Andrew Cummins followed with a base hit to drive in a pair of runs to make it 9-7, and Mullins scored on a wild pitch to make it 10 -7.
Doug Porras finished off the eighth for the win.
Sunday’s winners bracket game featured MH vs. the San Mateo White Sox, who had beaten the Delta Indians on Saturday. MH got off to a quick 5-0 lead in the first two innings, but San Mateo rallied with three in the third and two more in the fourth to tie at 5-5.
San Mateo took a 9-5 lead with four runs in the sixth before MH mounted a comeback in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs to pull within 9-7 and load the bases with two outs. But a strikeout ended the rally and the game.
Moving on to an elimination game, MH took on the Delta Indians.
Again, MH took an early lead, going ahead 1-0 in the first inning. But Delta rallied for a three runs in the second and four more in the fifth sandwiched around an MH run to take a 7-2 lead.
MH again mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, tallying two runs in the inning and had the tying run at the plate with one out.
But a controversial double play ended the rally, the game and MH’s chances.
