The Live Oak Emerald Regime Marching Band and Color Guard will host its annual Emerald Regime Invitational Winter Guard Competition on Saturday, Jan. 31.
The Emerald Regime with its usual history of tradition and excellence is the oldest consistently competitive scholastic color guard in the California Color Guard Circuit, the competitive circuit for the Northern California area. This year’s show promises to be an exciting evening of color guard activity with 30 units in the competition including the two current World Champions, Logan High School, a scholastic guard from Union City, and the Raiders World Guard, an independent unit from San Jose.
Guards from as far away as Fairfield, Modesto and Concord as well as neighboring units from San Jose and Santa Cruz will make up the competitive field.
Color Guard refers to the flags and simulated rifles and sabers that are part of a high school marching band. The Emerald Regime Color Guard will perform a show entitled “Equis.” With sparkling orange costumes, fiery orange and blue flags and a blue floor with orange rays creating the “X”, the excitement of the colors matches the energy of the modern-flavored renaissance music. Captain and senior Amanda Tewes leads this year’s dedicated guard of 10 made up of two juniors, one sophomore, two freshmen and four eighth graders.
The Emerald Regime is also sponsoring a guard comprised of students from Britton and Martin Murphy middle schools. This guard, called the Emerald Guard, will be making its competitive debut at the Emerald Regime Invitational. Performing a show entitled “Behind the Waterfall,” these five hard-working eight graders, all brand new to the activity, create a very pleasing effect especially with their intricate double swing flag work at the end of the show.
Competition begins at 4 p.m. and will conclude at 9:30 p.m. The Emerald Guard competes at 4:42 p.m. and the high school guard, the Emerald Regime, competes at 6:58 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door and the event is being held in the gym.
