Mr. Berney’s career as an educator of 28 years included teaching biology at Pioneer and Leland High schools, and as administrator at Hacienda Science Magnet and Gunderson High schools. John’s summers were spent at Boy Scout Camp High Sierra in various capacities including camp director for 10 of those years.

Upon his retirement from the San Jose Unified School District in 1989, John enjoyed membership in many service and social organizations. John had many hobbies including piloting light planes, woodworking, and traveling extensively with his wife, Dorothy. He and Dorothy were married for 45 years.

He was the loving husband of Dorothy, father of Andrew N. Berney of Chandler, Ariz., and John E. Berney of Morgan Hill. He was the grandfather of Jenna and Stephen Berney of Chandler, Ariz., and grandfather to many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass to held at Saint Julie Billiart Parish, 6410 Cottle Road, San Jose, on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Kaiser Santa Teresa Hospice, 275 Hospital Parkway #825, San Jose.
