An effort by Live Oak and Sobrato high schools to move into the Blossom Valley Athletic League is proceeding, and has earned a positive recommendation from the Central Coast Section realignment committee.
According to Live Oak Athletic Director Mark Cummins, the schools want to move to the BVAL in order to compete with schools nearer in size to their own. With the opening of Sobrato, Live Oak’s enrollment is projected to decrease substantially. Meanwhile, other schools in the Tri-County Athletic League, where Live Oak currently competes, are growing. Cummins said the fact that many local parents of athletes work north of Morgan Hill means re-leaguing will allow them to attend more of their kids’ games.
The BVAL currently has 22 schools with a range of enrollments, and places sports teams in one of three divisions based on previous performance.
The CCS realignment committee has already reviewed the local schools’ request to move into the Central Conference, where the BVAL resides – a necessary precursor to re-leaguing, and held a public hearing on Oct. 26. Next, the CCS executive committee will review the request. If approved with no appeal, the CCS board of managers would consider the schools’ request to move into the BVAL, which would occur for the 2006-07 school year. There has been no opposition to the proposal so far.
