The OVYSL Sting saved the best for last with three goals in the last six minutes in a come-from-behind 3-1 win over the Santa Cruz Breakers at the Morgan Hill soccer complexon Saturday.
The Breakers broke a scoreless tie by scoring in the last minute of the first half for a 1-0 lead.
But the Sting kept the Breakers at bay in the second half with superb backline defense by Caitlin Azevedo, Kayla Cisneroz and Amanda Morgan. Goalie Allison Troini turned back all Breaker second-half shots.
The timely substitutions of Nicole Gonzalez and Nicole Locicero re-energized the Sting’s offensive passing scheme.
With six minutes left in the game, Katelynn Hughes fed Erin Slattery. The strong force of Slattery’s kick prevented the goalie from holding on to the ball for the tying score.
Three minutes later, Erin Evanger crushed the ball towards the Breaker goalie. The ball ricocheted to Slattery who, evading three Breaker defenders, made the shot for a 2-1 lead.
One minute before the end of the game, Slattery scored again on another great pass from Hughes, completing the hat trick. The end-of-game scoring flurry resulted in a 3-1 Sting victory to end the regular season.
Tornadoes U13 girls
The Tornadoes wrapped up their league schedule with another strong showing. The Tornadoes are currently alone in second place in the league, pending completion of all scheduled games.
SSJYSL Tornadoes 1, Stanford Wild Fire 0
The Tornadoes turned in another solid defensive performance, shutting out the Wildfire. The Tornadoes controlled play early, but were unable to capitalize.
Their best early chance came when Bella Comin chipped a ball that cleared the goalie’s head, but found the crossbar instead of the net.
The momentum shifted as the Wildfire turned up the heat in their offensive end. It looked as if the Wildfire‚s efforts would produce a goal, as a Tornadoes’ defender was called for a hand ball in the box, resulting in a penalty kick.
The Tornadoes dodged the bullet when Amanda Kline, standing in for regular goalie Nichole Downing, was able to get her hands on the shot and knock it down, preserving the shutout.
After halftime, the Tornadoes broke through offensively when JC Clayton gathered a loose ball near midfield and made a great run through several defenders to beat the goalie for a 1-0 advantage. The Tornadoes‚ always strong defense made the lone goal stand up the rest of the way with a tremendous team effort that left the Wildfire on the short end of the shutout.
The Tornadoes move on to District Cup play next weekend, looking to top off an incredible first-year run in Class I.
