An incident of apparent road rage led to a Belmont man suffering an injury to his leg after a vehicle struck him Sunday evening.

Peter Velz, 44, was driving northbound on Highway 101 at approximately 9:40pm when he allegedly became involved in a road rage incident with another driver. Both drivers stopped along the Tennant Avenue offramp. The men apparently were planning to fight.

Velz exited his vehicle and began to walk down the off-ramp, in the dark, as Alma Cortez, 18, of Morgan Hill, entered the offramp from 101 in her Honda.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Cortez saw Velz at the last moment and swerved, attempting to avoid him, but the front corner of her Honda hit Velz in the leg, throwing him up into the air.

Velz landed on the grass embankment with a severe gouge on his leg. He was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose for treatment. Cortez received a laceration to her eye, but did not require hospitalization.
