Accident
• Two people were flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose for treatment after a one-car accident Sunday afternoon. Alfredo Gonzalez, 21, of San Jose, and Nicola Matz, 18, of Santa Clara, were injured when the convertible Mustang driven by Gonzalez spun out of control, became airborne and rolled several times. Both Gonzalez and his passenger, were wearing seatbelts.
The accident occurred shortly after 2pm when the Mustang was traveling south on Highway 101, north of Cochrane Road. Gonzalez, driving at an estimated 100 mph in heavy traffic, passed several vehicles before swerving right into the exit lane for Cochrane Road. Gonzalez then swerved left back across the lanes and lost control of the Mustang, which spun across the right lanes and slid off the west side of the highway. The Mustang hit the westbound on-ramp and became airborne until it hit the shoulder of the on-ramp and rolled several times, according to witnesses.
The Mustang landed on its wheels at the top of the Cochrane Road bridge embankment. Witnesses stopped to help the driver and passenger before rescue personnel arrived. The driver’s kidney and spleen were ruptured, and his lungs were bruised. Matz, who has been released from the hospital, suffered a broken shoulder blade.
Gonzalez was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
