Dear Editor,
Downtown Morgan Hill has some severe problems.
• Traffic: When the major downtown improvements were installed, all of the original highly paid consultants said that the downtown would not be vibrant with a four-lane highway down the middle. Of all the departments, committees, etc. involved, only the fire department prevented the two-lane downtown from happening because Butterfield was not in place.
The changes needed can cheaply be done with paint (restripe).
As a resident of the downtown I daily see the challenges to pedestrians. How many more pedestrians have to die?
•. Zoning: The Burns Report (another consultant that did not come cheap) on the downtown, said that the retail would never amount to much as long as office space on the first floor facing Monterey Road existed. For retail to succeed it had to be shoulder to shoulder.
• The results: Today, Butterfield is in from Cochrane all the way down to Tennant and still the fire department fights any changes to the downtown traffic.
The zoning remains the same. When and if the zoning does change, all the existing offices will have to be grandfathered, meaning the offices will remain for many more years.
Take a good look. Until some major changes are made and soon you can continue to check the obituary section.
Let’s wake up and work together.
Don Jensen, Morgan Hill
