The warm weather this week has brought a lot of golf clubs out
of the closets. If you
’re one of them, this tip will help you get off to a good start
this spring. A good number of my students have trouble hitting the
ball solid instead of the “ground” first because they are releasing
their wrists too soon in the downswing.

A good drill for this is the lag drill. Start the downswing by holding wrists in the cocked position and let your right elbow fall into your right hip. Allow your left arm to fall all the way until it is even with the ball. At this point look to see if you have maintained your wrist position that you started into the downswing. “Pump” your arms twice to this lag position, and the third time swing through the ball.
This drill is an excellent way to train your wrists to hold their position until you need them to release at the ball instead of too early.
