Fresno, after a lengthy bout with pneumonia.
Lloyd Edmund Mader died Feb. 23, 2004, at the age of 87 in Fresno, after a lengthy bout with pneumonia.
Lloyd was born in Oshkosh, Wis., on July 4, 1916. His mother, Frances Goins, raised Lloyd and his three sisters during hard times. Moving to California in the 1930s, he began working a variety of jobs, including motorcycle courier and horse trainer. He married Mae Monter in 1944 and became the father of two sons.
Lloyd began working for Dorrington (Dorin) Manufacturing Co. in the San Fernando Valley in about 1950. He worked his way up to electrical engineer and then in 1968, moved to Gilroy as a sales representative.
His wife, Mae, worked as a secretary at Nordstrom School in Morgan Hill until her death in 1974. Lloyd continued working, raising and breeding horses at his “Red Spur Ranch” until his retirement and moving to Coarsegold in 1987. He spent the next 17 years living in the foothills between Fresno and Yosemite near family, friends and traveling.
Known as “the Old Cowboy,” he made friends wherever he was. His skills as a handyman were always in demand, even in his 80s.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mae; and sisters Erma Hiatt and Francis. Fronk.
Surviving family members are Helen Mae Ring of Clovis; and sons Gary of Gilroy and David Mader of Scotts Valley.
A graveside service will be held St. Mary’s Cemetery in Gilroy at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13. A celebration of life will be held at his home in Indian Lakes, Coarsegold on March 20 at 1 p.m.
