There wasn

play calling in the Bulldogs football program’s first-ever Maroon
and White varsity intra-squad scrimmage in front of a group of
parents and fans at Sobrato on Saturday. For the most part, the
first-team offense just ran the ball r

to Steven Gutierrez, Russ Tyrey and Erik Woodruff behind an
offensive line that opened big holes. It was smash-mouth football
at its finest and had Patterson pleased with the crisp
performance.
There wasn’t much subterfuge in Sobrato High head coach Jeff Patterson’s play calling in the Bulldogs football program’s first-ever Maroon and White varsity intra-squad scrimmage in front of a group of parents and fans at Sobrato on Saturday.
For the most part, the first-team offense just ran the ball right at the defense, with quarterback Matt Kellett handing off to Steven Gutierrez, Russ Tyrey and Erik Woodruff behind an offensive line that opened big holes.
It was smash-mouth football at its finest and had Patterson pleased with the crisp performance.
“We got 90 percent of our playbook in because of the work we did over the summer,” Patterson said. “The whole offensive line did a great job with their assignments and opening up holes.
“If we can repeat that on Friday we’ll be okay.”
Patterson was referring to this Friday’s scrimmage at Gonzales, when the Bulldogs will get their first shot at hitting someone other than teammates. The scrimmage is scheduled for 4pm.
Patterson, who coached at Gonzales before taking the Bulldogs job, admitted he’s looking forward to Friday’s scrimmage as a more accurate barometer of his team’s progress. That was esepcially tru because the Bulldogs’ 25-player roster features many two-way starters and didn’t allow the luxury of pitting many first-team performers against each other in the intra-squad scrimmage.
“We’ll get a lot more out of the scrimmage this Friday,” Patterson said. “We’re right where we want to be , or maybe even a little bit ahead right now.”
