Six of seven people in a Ford Aerostar driven by Celso Carbajal, 37, of Santa Maria, were injured Sunday afternoon when it rolled on U.S. 101 north of Dunne Avenue. The only one not injured was a 2-year-old girl strapped in a car seat.
The other six, five passengers of various ages and the driver, received injuries that were not life-threatening. The injured were taken from the scene by ambulance; and once clear of the highway, two were taken by a medical helicopter to San Jose Medical Center.
As Carbajal drove southbound on Highway 101 at approximately 3:45 p.m. Sunday, he lost control of the van for unknown reasons. The van careened off the road, hit a guardrail and flipped on its side. A 9-year-old boy was ejected, striking the guardrail, but received only minor cuts to his head and leg.
Others in the van suffered cuts, bumps and bruises to heads, backs and legs, according to CHP Officer Brad Voyles.
Voyles said there was no indication of alcohol or drugs involved in the accident, but the accident is under investigation.
The accident snarled traffic until debris was removed from the roadway.
