Dear Editor,
In conjunction with the American Red Cross’ Operation: Care and Comfort Military Care Package Program, the City of Morgan Hill is sponsoring a program to collect items for care packages shipped to U.S. service members in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each care package will contain donated hygiene items, snacks, stationery and writing instruments, as well as other items such as socks, undergarments, DVDs, and hand held games. In addition, each care package contains a hand written letter of support from individuals all across America.
Since April 2003, our all volunteer-run, community-based program has shipped more than 52,000 pounds of care packages to U.S. troops. We have kicked off our holiday drive, Operation: Season’s Greetings 2004, and anticipate shipping thousands of pounds of care packages for the holiday season. We currently have 25 adopted units that we ship to on a monthly basis. When they return, we adopt another. Many are from the Bay Area.
A collection barrel has been placed at the Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. Financial assistance is also appreciated to help with shipping costs of roughly $1 per pound. All donations are tax deductible, and all cash contributions are used to pay shipping costs or to purchase items for care packages.
We also are in need of thousands of hand-written letters and cards for the care packages, so we encourage schools, Scout troops, church groups and other organizations to help. Program information and a complete list of items needed, as well as information on check and credit card donations, can be found at www.santaclaravalley-.redcross.org, http://www.santacl-aravalley.redcross.org, or contact me ia at (408) 373-8635. Checks should be made payable to Operation: Care and Comfort, and can be mailed to: Red Cross Operation: Care and Comfort, 2731 N. First St., San Jose, CA 95134
Thank you for your help in sending a bit of holiday cheer to those serving our country so far from home.
Julie DeMaria,
volunteer coordinator
