The SSJYSL Tornadoes had a mixed weekend, routing the OVSYL Clash and tying the MVAL Cyberrays.

The Tornadoes faced off against the team that took their place in OVYSL, the Clash, in league play on Saturday defeating them 5-0.

The Tornadoes made sure the outcome was decided early, scoring less than two minutes into the game.

Goalie Nicole Downing made a strong clearing kick that was controlled by Amanda Whitling at midfield. Whitling pushed the ball ahead to Bella Comin, who streaked in and scored from the right wing.

The Tornadoes scored early and often in the game, their second goal came when Lexi MacPhail pushed the ball ahead to Comin, who made a very nice cross to Taylor Johnson, who scored the goal.

Johnson returned the favor, crossing the ball left to right to Comin, who netted the ball for a 3-0 score.

With about half the first half remaining, Coach Whitling shuffled the deck in an effort to keep the score in hand.

Even with many players in unfamiliar spots, the Tornadoes would still add two more goals before halftime.

Goal four came on a cross from Cloey LemMon to MacPhail, and the fifth came following a corner kick by Amanda Kline. The initial kick was turned away, but Kline controlled the rebound and centered the ball to Stephanie Wan who netted the goal for the 5-0 halftime score.

The Tornadoes continued to shuffle players in the second half, with Kline taking over in goal for Downing.

Although the Tornadoes had a comfortable lead, the shutout was jeopardized when the Clash got a point blank shot about 15 minutes into the half.

Kline got her hands up high to deflect the shot, and controlled the rebound to squelch the threat.

The Tornado defense, with Lindsay Pund, Sarah Block, Nikita Patel, Mary Thatcher, JC Clayton, and Alex Seda, made certain the Clash would not break their scoring drought at the Tornadoes’ expense.

The only bad thing to come out of the game for the Tornadoes was a leg injury sustained by Block that would keep her out of action on Sunday.

On Sunday, the goals were not as easy to come by, as the Tornadoes played to a scoreless tie against the Cyberrays, who were third in the league standings, just ahead of the Tornadoes, entering the weekend’s play.

Although neither team could find the back of the net, the Tornadoes controlled play, and had several good opportunities to score.

The Tornadoes came very close to scoring on an excellent “top shelf” shot from Taylor Johnson, but the Cyberrays goalie leaped and made a punch save, sending the ball over the top of the goal and out of play.

The Tornadoes travel to Golden Gate Park to continue league play next weekend.
