What looked like an upset in the making turned ugly for Salinas on Homecoming night with a fourth quarter collapse both on the field and off, resulting in a 14-10 win for Live Oak High.
At the end of the game, Salinas was called for three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, effectively ending the game. When the teams came out to shake hands after the game, Kenneth Parker attacked the official who made the disputed calls.
The whole mess started with Salinas up 10-6 midway through the fourth quarter. Live Oak senior A.J. Avellar recovered a fumbled snap on the Cowboy 33-yard-line. Two big pass plays later, LO took the lead for good on a 28-yard pass from running back Doug Porras to quarterback Iseman for a touchdown with 6:05 left to play. LO also converted a two-point play to provide the final margin.
“We had to find a few extra plays in the playbook,” said LO coach Glen Webb. “We are in seventh heaven.”
Later in the fourth quarter, with about a minute to play and the Acorns in possession, LO’s Kevin Abbott took a handoff and coughed it up, but was ruled down on the play. The Cowboys hotly contested the call and were called for the three key penalties as a result, allowing the Acorns to run out the clock.
The victory upped LO’s record to 7-0 overall, 2-0 in TCAL.
The Acorns scored first on a two-yard run by Kevin Abbott with 2:25 to play in the first quarter, but the Cowboys blocked the PAT, and the Acorns led 6-0.
