GILROY – The Lady Rams softball squad was quick to react to a two-run, first-inning deficit in Saturday’s home opener against San Francisco City College, rallying for the next 10 runs for a 10-2 victory.

“We spotted them two in the first and then the Rams romped,” head coach Tim Kenworthy said. “I was very pleased with how we came out.”

Gavilan sophomore hurler Stephanie Denton, coming off a 13-win freshman campaign, went four strong innings, striking out two, walking two, and allowing no earned runs.

Freshman Tanya Isbell relieved Denton in the fifth inning and struck out one batter before the game was ended by the seven-run mercy rule.

“Everybody played really well,” Kenworthy said. “I was very pleased with our execution. We had two or three sacrifice bunts, which moved runs over and then the batters who came up after came through in the clutch.”

The Lady Rams have a 14-player opening day roster, which included big offensive games from freshman shortstop Christine Miles (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) and freshman first baseman Megan MacDonald (2-for-2, single, double, walk, 4 RBIs).

Seven different Gavilan batters registered the team’s nine hits, nine RBIs with no strikeouts.

“I was very, very pleased that we made contact consistently throughout the game,” Kenworthy said. “Other than first inning, which I think was a little bit of first-game jitters, where we made two errors, we settled down and played errorless ball so I was very pleased.”

The Lady Rams will remain at home for Tuesday’s contest against Los Medanos at 3 p.m. on the Gavilan College softball diamond.
