In the highly comp-etitive Tri-County Athletic League, all the girls basketball teams have to take advantage of an opportunity to pick up a victory whenever they can.
But it’s especially essential when the teams in question come into a game without a league win.
That was the situation when the Live Oak High girls basketball team traveled to Gilroy to take on the Mustangs on Wednesday night.
Neither team had managed a league win, both were mired in the TCAL cellar and both were hungry for a victory.
It seemed like a good match-up for the green Acorns, who have battled through a sour season.
Unfortunately for the Acorn girls, it was the Mustangs who emerged victorious, pulling off a surprisingly dominant 74-40 win over Live Oak.
Live Oak fell to 0-5 in league and 2-17 overall with the loss, while Gilroy improved to 1-4 in league and 9-12 overall with the win.
Gilroy ended a four-game losing streak that began in its league opener against Salinas.
Live Oak trailed by eight after the first quarter and by 10 at the half before the Mustangs pulled away in the second half.
The Acorns play at Hollister-San Benito on Friday at 5:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheaeder with the Live Oak boys team.
