How many people in our community are effected by cancer each year, month, day? I know of five just this last year that have touched my heart, a 3 year old, a 30 year old and a 50 year old all still battling cancer. Then there are the two who lost the fight, a young 34-year old surfer, athletic – a kind and gentle man; and a loving wonderful dad, grandpa, friend and soul-mate who enjoyed a long life and touched many along the way.
We all have stories like this and we’ve all been touched in special ways by cancer. As a community we can come together to fight, honor and celebrate cancer (fight to find a cure, honor those who’ve won the battle and those who have fallen, and celebrate the memories by standing up and doing something for your family member, friend or neighbor).
This year’s Relay will be held on Live Oak High School’s new track and field beginning May 22 and ending 24 hours later. We invite the community to come out and celebrate the fight against cancer with your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors.
We encourage members of our community to form relay teams and send your leaders to the team captain meetings held at the Holiday Inn Express at 7 p.m. on these dates: Feb. 10 and 24; March 16 and 30; April 20; and May 11
Last year our community helped raise $145,000 for the American Cancer Society (ACS) – isn’t that outstanding? And this year our goal is to beat $150,000 but we need to reach out to more members of our community (businesses, church groups, youth groups, sports clubs, etc.).
There are so many people in our community that support this event currently, but there are so many more that don’t and who are directly effected by cancer. Let’s show community spirit in the fight to save lives and find a cure.
I invite anyone needing more information about the upcoming Relay for Life to call me at 778-6522.
