As microcosms go, Thursday night’s season finale against visiting Gilroy was as fiting as any for the Live Oak High girls basketball team’s season.
The Acorns, who finished up a season that saw them go 2-22 overall and 0-10 in the Tri-County Athletic League, stayed close for the first half then faded in the second half as their opponent’s height and depth began to wear them down.
But after the game, the Acorn girls remained remarkably upbeat despite the loss and the tough season, during which they lost 14 straight games.
In fact, Live Oak coach Richard Silva complim-ented his team’s attitude, which stayed positive for the most part throughout the season.
“I was glad that the girls never gave up,” Silva said. “We were hoping to get a victory in the TCAL but we knew it would be hard. We just had no height or depth.”
Seniors Melissa Llanes, Ruth Dominguez, Elana Guevara, Dana Cline and Megan Smart played their final games for Live Oak, which also lost to league champion Notre Dame by a 63-28 score on Tuesday.
