This spring, students at Gavilan College will be offered a new class schedule, with longer classes that meet fewer days per week.

The new schedule, called a block schedule, means students can choose to take classes on a Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday basis, with Fridays off.

Gavilan College’s new block schedule will offer block classes in the morning, afternoon and evening when the spring semester begins Jan. 24.

The current, non-block schedule holds semester classes on a Tuesday/Thursday and Monday/Wednesday/Friday basis, with many classes starting before noon. Non-block classes generally last 50 minutes. The new schedule extends the classes about 25 minutes.

Although many classes will be offered in block, the new schedule was not compatible with all courses, said Jan Bernstein Chargin, spokeswoman for Gavilan.

A complete listing of spring course offerings and schedules was sent to students via mail several weeks ago, with a four-page spread detailing which classes are offered in block. Schedules also are available online at www.gavilan.edu

The new schedule should afford students more flexibility with their time as well as ease parking problems at the school, Chargin said.

The change will give students more flexibililty in balancing classes, work and family responsibilities, Chargin said. By requiring fewer days on campus, the schedule can help students save on gas and have more control over their study time.

Most other community colleges throughout the Bay Area have already made the shift.

Changing will require some adjustment, including sitting in class and having to focus for longer periods of time.

Enrollment also remains open for winter intersession classes. Registration will be open through Jan. 4 for the classes to be held Jan. 3-23.

Class schedules will be available beginning Jan. 3. The college is closed for winter break.

The last day to add a class is Jan. 28, and the last day to drop a class for a refund is Feb. 7 for the spring semester.
