A police chase Friday night resulted in the arrest of a 25-year-old Morgan Hill man and a slight injury to a Morgan Hill police officer.
Adrian L. Gamino was walking along DeWitt Avenue at approximately 7:20pm when officers on patrol in the area spotted him and stopped to talk to him. When officers learned he was on parole, they conducted a pat-down search, and Gamino then bolted away from officers, according to MHPD Cmdr. Terrie Booten.
“He fled down DeWitt through an open field,” she said. “As officers pursued him, the officer behind him saw he had reached in the front of his pants and was dropping clear plastic baggies on the way.”
The injury to the officer occurred as officers began converging on the area, on foot and in cars. As Gamino reached the quad area near City Hall, the officer was approaching in a car on Alkire Street and hit a bollard, a cement pole blocking the area from traffic, as he was arriving at City Hall, Booten said.
“He bumped his head and nose, on the steering wheel I believe,” she said. He was not seriously injured, she said.
Gamino was captured in the quad area between City Hall and the library, Booten said. He was taken to jail on charges of possession of controlled substances for sale and for resisting arrest. He also had outstanding warrants.
“Officers found a substantial amount of cash on him,” Booten said. “They also collected the baggies he dropped in the field, six baggies. Some of them had just a small amount of a powdery or crystalline substance, others contained more. There was a total of 14 grams of a powdery substance, presumably meth.”
Officers also conducted a search of his residence, Booten said, where they found .76 grams of marijuana.
