Live Oak High wrestling under new head coach Robert Fernandez is off to a strong start. Coach Fernandez brought two female wrestlers to the Northern California invitational tournament last Saturday and both placed. Beatrice Castro, a senior and returning team member, placed third and Moriah Fernandez, a freshman, placed fourth – both at 138 pounds.

The Live Oak wrestlers ended up wrestling each other in the consolation semifinals after going 3-1 in their first four matches.

Live Oak followed up the girls’ strong start with a solid showing at the Gilroy Novice Tournament on Wednesday, including a first-place finish by Mitch Haaser and additional wins by Matt Mito, Robert Rodriguez, Raul Parades, Buck Tanner, Moriah Fernandez, Brett Jones and Sean Simonsen. Each of the wrestlers came away with a win and most of them with multiple victories.

Coach Robert Fernandez said that it was a solid good start for a young team and he is looking forward to additional mat time to increase the wrestlers’ technical skills.
