It may or may not be the school’s first trophy, but either way it’s definitely a major triumph for the brand new program.
On Wednesday, the Sobrato High JV boys basketball team claimed the Consolation championship at the Wilcox Tournament, beating host Wilcox 58-33.
But Sobrato coach Lawrence Crawford admitted he doesn’t know for sure if it’s the school’s first trophy or not, although his players have no such doubts.
“The kids are all fired-up about being the first team to get a trophy to put in the case,” Crawford said. “But these are 14 and 15-year-olds so you have to take (that claim) with a grain of salt.”
Since the Sobrato JV girls soccer team finished third at a varsity tournament last month, there was some question about the trophy issue.
But that didn’t diminish the Bulldog boys’ accomplishment at this week’s tournament.
Sobrato (9-4 overall) won two of three games at the tourney, losing its first-round game to Oak Grove 68-36 on Monday before beating Yerba Buena 56-38 on Tuesday and Wilcox yesterday.
Against Wilcox, Sobrato’s Quincy Rich scored a team-high 15 points, while Marqus Crawford added 10.
Crawford scored 17 points against both Oak Grove and Yerba Buena.
Sobrato’s Matt Kellett added 10 against Oak Grove, and Mark Garma had 10 against Yerba Buena.
Last week, on Saturday, Sobrato dropped a 49-47 decision at Palma despite 28 points from Crawford.
Sobrato plays next at Terra Nova in Pacifica on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 7:30pm.

Sobrato power forward Gabrielle Aguirre scored 11 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Bulldogs JV girls basketball team dropped a 52-31 decision to Hollister-San Benito on Monday. It was the second loss to the Haybalers for Sobrato.
Bulldog center Nina Baio added seven points and seven rebounds for Sobrato (3-7 overall).
Sobrato was scheduled to play at Santa Clara last night, then play a couple of games next week.
The Bulldogs are set to play at Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday at 6pm, and to host Gunderson on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 6pm.
