San Jose – The first piece of the Coyote Valley development puzzle is place following the opening Friday of the Bailey Avenue interchange off U.S. 101.

The project, just north of the Morgan Hill city limits, is a holdover from the high-tech boom. It was expected to be the entrance way for a new Cisco Systems corporate campus that was scrapped when the economy fizzled.

San Jose planners now envision Bailey Avenue as the main entry to their proposed development that they hope will bring 25,000 jobs and 80,000 people to Coyote Valley.

“It will be the gateway to all of Coyote Valley,” said Nanci Klein, corporate outreach manager for San Jose “It adds tremendous capacity from 101 and the ability to develop the area.”

The interchange cost $23.6 million, with $19.3 million in funding coming from Caltrans.

An overpass that will extend to Monterey Road is scheduled to open in November. Construction started in April 2003.

The interchange also provides new access from local streets to U.S. 101.

The total project cost is $23.6 million: $19.3 million from the California State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), which includes $14.8 million from Caltrans and $4.5 million in local STIP through VTA, and $4.3 million from the City of San José.
